- Scope of Position
- This role is expected to take an active role in the design, development and maintenance and to provide assistance with the support of applications software.
- The requirements of this position include technical analysis and programming, integration support, technical customer support and operations support.
- Functional Tasks and Responsibilities
Analysis and Development
- Designing, coding, testing and installing applications programs up to 75% of the time, either in one major program or a range of programs across multiple platforms
- Preparing and maintaining systems and program documentation
- Assisting in the analysis and design of applications programs and databases.
- Developing enhancements to applications programs
- Assist in problem determination and resolution
- Liaising with business analysts to confirm/clarify business requirements
- Work with the business analysts to evaluate possible solutions, and refine the business and technical requirements
- Ensure that solutions are developed within agreed time frames and to the agreed scope such that business requirements are met
- Provide quality applications that are free of defects, fit for purpose, and designed for ongoing ease of support and maintenance
- Develop solutions that meet the security and privacy standards of UBC
- Adhere to published processes and procedures and recommend enhancements to process and procedures where appropriate
- Effectively communicate the status of development activities to the Project Manager
Skills, Knowledge and/or experience
- 3+ years of experience in Programming and Applications Design, with a minimum of 2 years in a large IT site, coupled with tertiary qualifications in Computer Science or a related discipline
- At least 3 years commercially proven experience in developing applications, including at least 2 years working with Microsoft .NET and/or the Java language, architecture and design standards
- Developed knowledge of Object Orientated (OO) analysis and design, OO methodologies and techniques
- Developed skills and knowledge of one of the major relational database packages such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL or DB2
- Good skills in personal work organisation and time management
- An ability to work to agreed deadlines
- Ability to understand the essential needs of users and meet these in well designed programs
- Experience in component and assembly testing
- In depth knowledge of the SDLC
- Knowledge of common debugging techniques
- A tertiary degree in Computer Science or a related discipline
- Experience in planning and estimating personal work effort
